Rutherford was no theorist, but his one important contribution to the theory of atomic structure was his prediction of the scattering law of alpha-particles by a charged nucleus, Rutherford scattering. This is an example of his calculation of the hyperbolic orbit of a charged particle under the influence of an inverse square field of force.
