Rutherford challenged Blackett to photograph the disintegration of nitrogen nuclei in a Wilson cloud chamber. Shimizu had made progress in automating the Cloud Chamber which was much improved by Blackett. Blackett demonstrated that the nuclei of nitrogen were not disintegrated but transmuted into nuclei of oxygen with the liberation of fast protons. Blackett was awarded the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work with the automated cloud chamber.</p>
