Cavendish Laboratory : Moving element of the 4C interferometer at the Lord's Bridge radio observatory

Cavendish Laboratory

Photograph of the moving element of the 4C interferometer at Lord's Bridge. This large interferometer used the principles of aperture synthesis to create a high sensitivity map of the northern sky at 178 MHz. The 4C catalogue became the standard source catalogue at that frequency, eventually containing about 5,000 radio sources of small angular diameter with flux densities greater than 2 Jy.
