Cavendish Laboratory : Pulsar Array

Cavendish Laboratory

Colour photograph of the 4-acre pulsar array at Lord's Bridge built in 1965-67 built under the direction of Antony Hewish. It was designed to detect the short time-scale fluctuations of the intensities of compact radio sources due to inhomogeneities in the intervening medium. Jocelyn Bell (-Burnell) and Hewish made the startling discovery of radio sources which pulsated with periods of one second or less - the pulsars. Their parent bodies are rotating, magnetised neutron stars.
