Walking with Constable

<p style='text-align: justify;'>On a cold but dry November day (22 Nov 2022) we were joined for <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='https://walking-the-landscape.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/walks/Walk-D/'>Walk D</a> by the <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='https://www.sudburyramblers.org.uk/'>Sudbury Ramblers</a>, a group who regularly explore Constable Country, and by Simon Peachey who is the National Trust Site Manager for <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/suffolk/flatford'>Flatford</a>. On this circular route, we explored three key locations for Constable's formative years.</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>At <a href='/view/PR-FITZWILLIAM-P-01360-R/1'>Dedham water mill</a>, we discussed the mezzotint process used to create the prints. From Dedham, we traced the course of the Stour downstream to Flatford, where we looked at the <a href='/view/PR-FITZWILLIAM-P-00232-01954-00001-D/1'>‘River Stour, Suffolk’ mezzotint</a>. After walking up through sunken lanes, we took an opportunity to look around the church of St Mary the Virgin in East Bergholt. As the sun began its descent, we paused to look at the <a href='/view/PR-FITZWILLIAM-P-00232-01954-00001-C/1'>‘Autumnal Sunset’ mezzotint</a>, a view looking west from East Bergholt towards Dedham and Stratford St Mary on the horizon. We then made our way back down into the valley and returned to Dedham.</p>
