After experiencing John Constable’s walk to school on the previous day, we returned to the local school with children’s author Inbali Iserles on Tuesday 23 May. Joining the Year 3 class who had accompanied us on Walk E, Inbali talked to the children about her work and read a passage from one of her books. The children were then tasked with using descriptive language and write their own short story, which some of them also illustrated using the ‘Summer Evening’ mezzotint as a background scene. It was a joy to see them all excitedly run towards the shelf of thesauruses in the classroom! This prepared them for the next exercise, in which each table group of children was given a section of a skeleton story and tasked with working together in their groups to embellish the details and events of the story. Each section was then joined together by Inbali to form a complete collaboratively written, and wonderful, short story with its roots in our walk with Constable!
