<p style='text-align: justify;'>Photographs taken by Joseph Needham on the journey to the southwest from 1 Aug. to 31 Oct., 1944, when Joseph Needham travelled from Chungking (Chongqing) 重慶市 to Kunming 昆明市, west through Yunnan Province 雲南省 past Tali (Dali) 大理 to Baoshan 保山市, then back to Kunming and on to Meit'an (Meitan) 湄潭 in Kweichow (Guizhou) province 貴州省. He was accompanied by SBSCO staff members Dorothy Needham and Tsao Tien-Chin (Cao Tianqin) 曹天欽, with Laurence Picken joining them in October 1944. The films and their photographs were not originally labelled in strict chronological order. Some sections of the negatives have not been developed because there are no images on the negative or because any images present are severely damaged or indistinct.</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>These images are also available to view in date order <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='http://www.nri.cam.ac.uk/JN_wartime_photos/sw.htm'>here</a>. Dr. Needham records this journey in his journal (<a href='/view/MS-NRI-00002-00005-00012-00002'> (NRI2/5/12/2)</a>).
