Southern African Collections

Contains Kodachromes originally arranged in two sequences, which have been listed by processing number: 1-37 (numbers 11, 19 and 31 mare missing).

John Ewart Marnham went to Bechuanaland in 1965, flying in to the capital, Gaberones, then flying to the extreme north of the country, entering the Chobe Game Reserve at Kasane. Then he flew over the Okavango swamp landing at Maun. He made a further flight photographing animals from the air, probably in the reserve north of Maun, then flew back to Lobatsi and Gaberones. Bechuanaland became independent as Botswana in 1966. Marnham apparently did not revisit it: unlike the other two former High Commission Territories it lies outslide the boundaries of South Africa.

Original photography by John Ewart Marnham, reproduced by kind permission of Mrs Elizabeth S. Marnham.
