Southern African Collections

An album containing mounted prints, the majority sepia toned, with typescript captions and explanatory notes depicting the peoples of southern Africa. The captions and notes have been recorded as found and may include language which is offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. They have been retained to reflect the context of the collection's creation. Captions supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets. The photographs were taken by Mrs Malcolm Barker [Dorothy Barker], [Lucy] Mignon Herring, Dr. Killie Campbell, Barbara Tyrrell, Dr [Vincent Aethalstan] Wager, [Lincesal] Lyn Acutt and C[laude] Whysall. The peoples represented are: Ndebele, Zulu, Tonga, Swazi, Shagaan, Bushmen, Basuto, Pondo, Xhosa, Fingo and Tembu. The term Bushmen was used to describe a group of Khoisan-speaking hunter-gatherers who lived in the Kalahari Desert. The album also contains two short articles (probably part of a longer series) on African costume by Barbara Tyrrell, extracted from the 'Veld Trust News' (February and March 1948).

Copyright notice: The album provides a list of contributors at the front; however, individual photographs are not credited to individual photographers. A number of photographs in this album are held in the collections of the Killie Campbell Africana Library, in some cases with the photographer credited. Where possible, the photographs have been cross-referenced, and the name of the likely photographer has been added to the description, together with the relevant reference to the album held by the KC Africana Library. Cambridge University Library has made every reasonable effort to locate, contact and acknowledge the descendants of the photographers as copyright owners. As of February 2024, copyright permission has been kindly given by the descendants of Barbara Tyrrell, Claude Whysall and Mignon Herring. We would welcome any additional information about any of the authors, creators and rights holders of images in this album, particularly relating to Killie Campbell, Lyn Acutt, Dorothy Barker and Vincent Wager.
