Royal Commonwealth Society : Trip to Australia and New Zealand 1888-1889
Royal Commonwealth Society

An album containing mounted photographs of various sizes, by various photographers, with either handwritten captions or captions on the prints. The photographs were bought during a tour to Australia and New Zealand, the pictures breaking down into geographical units thus: 1-8 Suez Canal and Aden; 9-127 Australia; 128-135 New Zealand; 136-137 Naples; 138 Group portrait of exhibitors, Melbourne 1888.

It seems probable that this album represents the private collection of someone (possibly J.F. Butterworth) who had some professional connection with the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1888, since it includes a group photograph of English exhibitors, and as well as general views of the exhibition buildings, pictures entitled 'Moseley's exhibit' (a Northern-based tailor), and 'Interior of Mr. Goodwood's Office', which would seem to imply a somewhat more specialised interest in the proceedings than mere tourism.
