Royal Commonwealth Society : Weston collection on nursing in West Africa: miscellaneous slides

Royal Commonwealth Society

These slides were taken by Elsie May Weston and her friend Gladys M. Pearce Simmonds ('Simmie') while they were employed as nurses in West Africa during the 1950s and 1960s. They form part of the much larger Weston collection on nursing in West Africa which was donated to the Royal Commonwealth Society Library in January 1994 by Mrs Janet Collings of Fulham. It had belonged to her aunt, Elsie May Weston, who died in February 1988 aged 61. Mrs Collings wrote 'I think that the first posting for my aunt began in the early 1950s. I do not know when Miss Pearce Simmonds first worked abroad but she may have already been working in Africa when my aunt arrived. I believe that they returned to the UK in 1966. Miss Pearce Simmonds died in 1985'. The photographs, 50 x 50 mm colour slides - mostly Kodak, were originally stored in a carrying case and capture scenes from the nurses' work in community health care in Nigeria and Ghana. They were listed in detail by Erica Ryan, with minor amendments by D.H. Simpson.
