<p style='text-align: justify;'>Frederick Steele was born to Canadian parents in Iowa, who returned to the country shortly after the outbreak of the American Civil War and settled in Toronto. In 1876 he began working in the Toronto photographic studio of Notman & Fraser, where he completed an apprenticeship. Steele moved to Winnipeg in 1886 and formed a partnership with Edward Wing in the following year. After Wing’s departure in 1892, the firm continued as Steele and Company. Steele travelled widely within western Canada, photographing the Rocky Mountains and the railways for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and documenting the Prairie’s pioneers and indigenous people.</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>See Janus record <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href='https://janus.lib.cam.ac.uk/db/node.xsp?id=EAD%2FGBR%2F0115%2FY3062R%2F13'>here</a></p>
