Algonquin is a provincial park in Ontario, Canada, located between Georgian Bay and the Ottawa River. It was founded in 1893 to preserve wildlife and the headwaters of five major rivers and is Canada’s oldest provincial park. Algonquin is now roughly 3,000 square miles in size, with over 2,400 lakes and approximately 720 miles of rivers and streams. Its name in the language of the region’s First Nation means ‘At the place of spearing fishes and eels.’ In the early twentieth century when this photo was taken, the then remote park was visited largely by intrepid fishermen drawn by the more than fifty species within its lakes and streams. Culturally the park is of great significance for Canadians and featured prominently in the work of the Group of Seven artists. Tom Thomson (1877-1917), closely associated with the group, painted ‘Smoke Lake, Algonquin Park’ in 1912.

See Janus record here
