Cambridge Bookbindings : A simple gilt-tooled Cambridge binding of the 1620s

Aelfric Abbot of Eynsham

Cambridge Bookbindings

A quite simply-decorated gilt-tooled Cambridge binding of the 1620s, incorporating the distinctive flying pheasant tool. The book’s Cambridge pedigree is enhanced by the fact that it belonged to Abraham Whelock (1593-1653), Professor of Anglo-Saxon and University Librarian, with extensive annotations in his hand.

Pasteboards, covered with dark brown calfskin, gilt-tooled. Rebacked, with new spine leather (originally a smooth spine, with recessed supports); red sprinkled leaf edges; narrow gilt roll round board edges; remains of green cloth ties; new endleaves, but preserving the original plain paper flyleaves and separate plain paper pastedowns.

Dr David Pearson
