Cambridge, George Braun, 1575.

This attractive map was first published in the second book of the six volume Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published 1572-1617 by George Braun and the engraver Frans Hogenberg. The complete work contains 363 plates which depict, in great detail, over 500 cities and towns, mostly in Europe but including some in Asia, Africa and America.

The map depicts Cambridge from the west – a different orientation to Lyne’s map produced a year earlier. However, closer inspection reveals strong resemblances between the two beyond what one might expect – both, for example, depict a fisherman and his catch. It has been suggested that both were drawn by the same draftsman, or alternatively that this map was carefully copied from Lyne’s so as to appear to be a new map without including any new information. It is known that Frans Hogenberg’s brother, Remigius, and Richard Lyne were both employed by Archbishop Matthew Parker (Master of Corpus Christ College Cambridge from 1544 to 1553).
