<p style='text-align: justify;'><i>Izumi meisho zue</i> is an example of a late eighteenth-century gazeteer, printed and illustrated by woodblock print. Cambridge's copy was owned by William George Aston (1841-1911), whose ex libris stamp appears <a href='' onclick='store.loadPage(2);return false;'>inside the front cover.</a></p><p style='text-align: justify;'>This copy may be compared to two digitized copies in Waseda University Library (<a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href=''>Ru 04-00348</a> and <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href=''>Ru 04-04749</a>) and one in the <a target='_blank' class='externalLink' href=''>National Diet Library of Japan</a>.</p><p style='text-align: justify;'>The <a href='' onclick='store.loadPage(191);return false;'>final page</a> of the main text identifies the author as Ritō Akisato Shōseki 籬島秋里湘夕, a name used by Akisato Ritō 秋里籬島, active 1780-1814. The <a href='' onclick='store.loadPage(191);return false;'>colophon</a> to the left identifies the artist as Shunchōsai Takehara Nobushige 春朝斎竹原信繁 (better known as Takehara Shunchōsai 竹原春朝齋, -1800), and it lists five publishers. Two publishers, including Takahashi Heisuke 高橋平助, were located in Kōto 皇都 [Kyoto]. Ogawa Tazaemon 小川多左衞門 and 3 other publishers were located in Naniwa 浪華 [Osaka].</p>
