<p style='text-align: justify;'>This detailed five part printed panorama of Freetown, Sierra Leone, was created in 1847 by Mrs Terry, the wife of the Assistant Superintendent of the Liberated Africans. In 1787, British anti‐slavery campaigners had founded Freetown as a home for freed slaves, providing the nucleus for the colony of Sierra Leone established in 1808. Freetown provided an important base for the Royal Navy’s campaign to suppress the slave trade. Four of the prints reflect the view from Terry’s upstairs windows in the Church Missionary Grammar School house. The fifth portrays the town and harbour as they appeared from the promontory of King Tom’s point.
