Cambridge Bookbindings : A gilt-tooled Cambridge binding, ca.1630-35

Virgil., Vegio, Maffeo 1406 or 1407-1458

Cambridge Bookbindings

A relatively simple gilt-tooled Cambridge binding made about, or shortly after, 1630. The tools which look a little like a seventeenth-century clock are very characteristic of Cambridge work of the 1620s and 30s; these are associated with a tool set which appeared ca.1630, including several which were clearly copied from ones brought in a couple of decades earlier.

Pasteboards, covered with dark brown calfskin, gilt-tooled. Smooth spine, with recessed tanned leather supports, gilt-tooled; leaf edges dyed red; gilt fillet round board edges; plain paper flyleaves and stubs, no pastedowns.

Dr David Pearson
