Maps : Cambridge

Cambridge, Wenceslaus Hollar ?, 1640.

This item is thought to have been published in approximately 1640. The map is copied from the one published by John Hamond in 1592 – the first accurately measured survey of Cambridge and measuring roughly 4 feet by 3 feet (it extended beyond the central area of Cambridge). Unfortunately, only a single complete copy of Hamond’s maps survives – in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. It was, however, used by other map makers as the basis of their own work and one such derivative, much reduced from the original and sometimes attributed to the Czech artist and mapmaker Wenceslaus Hollar, is illustrated here.
